1997: The SF Cup Winning Entry

One year after the surviving Kush cutting reached Los Angeles, an entry grown from it won a private cannabis cup in San Francisco. This photograph documents that entry - the earliest recognition of the plant outside LA in the record we hold.

“1997 OG Kush. This was my entry at an underground private cannabis cup held in San Francisco. This entry came in first out of 25 entries and confirmed we had something special.” Josh's annotation on the photograph. Josh D personal archive.

Why this matters

This is one of the earliest fixed points in the public timeline: a dated first-party record of the cut winning against Northern California's best a year after arriving in LA, before the OG name traveled. The event itself is independently corroborated - Leafly's OG Kush genealogy separately records Josh taking OG north to a 1997 Bay Area contest and winning.

This artifact is part of the primary-source record behind the OG Kush record and the OG Kush story.
