In 1996, the surviving Kush cutting out of Florida reached Los Angeles, where Josh grew it, cloned it, refined its cultivation and put it in the hands of the city - the starting point for the cultivar High Times Magazine named the #1 Greatest Strain of All Time. Many of the best-known modern OG lines trace back through the original cut. Josh is a named co-author of a 2021 ACS Omega study identifying a new family of sulfur compounds contributing to cannabis's characteristic pungent aroma. Today Josh D Kustom Shop Genetics operates across six states and continues releasing new genetics carrying the OG Kush vehicle.

Joshua Del Rosso - known throughout the cannabis world as Josh D - is one of the central figures behind the rise of OG Kush. In 1996, in the wake of California's Proposition 215, Matt Berger carried Kush cuttings from Florida to Los Angeles. One cutting survived the trip. It reached Josh, who rooted it, grew it, cloned it and refined the way it was cultivated until the plant out of his rooms became the standard the city measured against. In 1997, a Kush entry from Josh's rooms won a private cannabis cup in San Francisco - the cultivar's earliest documented recognition outside LA. Over the following three decades, OG Kush became the foundation of Southern California cannabis culture and one of the most influential varieties in the world; High Times Magazine named it the #1 Greatest Strain of All Time in 2014, and many of the best-known modern OG lines - Tahoe, SFV, Ghost, Larry and their descendants - trace back through the original cut. Josh is a named co-author of a 2021 peer-reviewed ACS Omega study identifying a new family of volatile sulfur compounds contributing to cannabis's characteristic pungent aroma. Today, Josh D Kustom Shop Genetics operates across six states and continues to release new genetics under his name, including The Smooch Collection, an 11-strain breeding project all carrying the OG Kush vehicle. A feature documentary, "The OG Kush Story," is in production with Josh as executive producer.
